Tutkimuksessa selvitetään suomalaisten nuorisoseuratoimijoiden itsensä esittämää kysymystä siitä, toteutuvatko alkiolaiset nuorisoseuraihanteet nykyisessä nuorisoseuratoiminnassa. Ensimmäiset nuorisoseurat hakivat muotoaan 1900-luvun taitteessa, jolloin Santeri Alkio muotoili puuhamiehenä aatteen suuntaviivoja. Alkio pyrki kohottamaan nuorisoseurojen avulla alimpien kansankerrosten nuorison sivistystasoa ja tietoisuutta omasta yhteiskunnallisesta tilastaan. Tätä päämäärää kohti hän lähti kulkemaan nuorisoseuroissa toteutettavan itsekasvatuksen idean avulla.
